Since beginning to put out blissful alt-pop melodies from her bedroom in 2020, Cathy Jain has impressed music lovers with her honeyed, multi-layered vocals, beautifully-realised melodic progressions and captivating instrumentation. At just 16 years old, Cathy has been described in the music press as a “prodigious young talent” and “one to watch in 2021”. Born in Salford but brought up in China and Australia before returning to the UK 4 years ago, her music also reflects her international experience. Writing and recording from her home in Cheshire, she has collaborated throughout the lockdown with producers in such exotic and far-flung places as Goa, Montreal, Paris and Guildford. Cathy’s three 2020 releases received much acclaim from the music industry and have received frequent plays on BBC Introducing on Radio 1 and Radio Stoke. Other achievements include a top ten spot in the UK Songwriting Academy 2020 competition, a place in the 2019 Teen Star final and (twice) winner of the Cheshire East Young Musician of the Year. This last award was presented for her performances on the guzheng, a Chinese harp that Cathy often brings into her songwriting, contributing to her unique sound. Cathy’s skilled songwriting deftly captures the insecurities and uncertainties that people of her age feel, while simultaneously celebrating the feelings of confidence and hope that come as they learn more about who they are. Her observations of how people behave toward each other and how they see themselves in their private moments are expressed with authenticity, passion and tenderness, all the while retaining an uber-cool, chill vibe that will have you entranced from the first note.
